Heritage & Lime

Heritage & Lime Rendering

Breathable, compatible lime-based rendering for older, traditional and solid-walled properties. We approach repairs and refurbishment with respect for the existing building fabric and the finish appropriate to its age.

Rendafacade brings over 30 years' experience in plastering and rendering to projects across Essex, London, Kent, Suffolk and the surrounding counties, assessing the property before specifying suitable work.

Heritage 01

Why use traditional lime render?

Traditional solid brick and stone walls often manage moisture differently from modern cavity-wall construction. A suitably designed lime-based render is generally more vapour-permeable and can help a compatible historic wall dry, while an overly dense or unsuitable modern coating may hinder that process.

Lime is not a cure for damp. Before choosing a finish, we consider the condition of the building, rainwater goods, ground levels, previous repairs and any sources of moisture. The correct materials must suit the original fabric and its exposure.

Heritage 02

Lime render repairs & preparation

On older buildings, the first step is identifying what can be retained. Unsound render, incompatible previous repairs, open joints and cracks are assessed before an appropriate repair method is agreed.

Careful preparation, compatible mortar strengths and suitable backgrounds are essential. Repairs are planned to preserve sound historic material and avoid unnecessary removal. A sample area can help match texture and finish to the existing building.

Lime putty & hydraulic lime systems

Traditional lime putty and natural hydraulic lime (NHL) systems each have different properties and setting characteristics. Selection depends on the substrate, weather exposure, existing masonry, required finish and relevant conservation advice.

Where specified, lime render is applied in compatible coats with appropriate reinforcement, curing and protection. The mix, aggregate, coat thickness and finishing method are agreed to suit the building rather than assuming one specification works everywhere.

Traditional finishes

Texture, colour & limewash

Heritage finishes may be gently floated, textured or finished with a compatible breathable mineral decoration such as limewash, where suitable. We consider the surrounding brick, stone and architectural details when discussing the final appearance.

A sample panel can help agree the colour, aggregate and texture before work begins. Natural lime finishes may develop subtle variations that form part of their traditional character.

Conservation matters

Listed & conservation buildings

Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas may require additional permissions or specialist input before existing render is removed, replaced or altered. We recommend checking any necessary consents with the local planning authority before instructing work.

Work is scheduled with the weather and curing requirements in mind; fresh lime render needs suitable protection from frost, driving rain and rapid drying. Specialist conservation advice may be required for significant historic fabric.

Our approach

Survey first, then specify

We begin by assessing the condition of the wall, any existing render, moisture risks and previous repairs. We then discuss compatible materials and the scope of work before preparing a written quotation. Conservation restrictions and any specialist investigations are identified early.

Discuss your heritage rendering project

Send us the age of the property, photographs of the existing walls, approximate areas and any known damp or previous repair issues. We can review the background, identify the next steps and provide a quotation for suitable lime rendering work.
